Copper is used as a base in this process; other metals can then be added, fired onto the enameled copper base. Silver will be used in the example shown here. Basic colors and designs are fired onto copper, following the steps in the basic enameling process. The piece is then ready for an application of a metal foil.

Different thicknesses of silver can be used. The thinnest, silver leaf, is seen on the left. Two thicker sizes are in the center. On the right are small, shaped and textured pieces of hand-rolled silver.
